👀TL;DR👀

Generative AI is revolutionizing businesses by overcoming the limitations of traditional discriminative AI. With access to vast pre-trained language models, businesses can unlock the full potential of their data, driving efficiency, innovation, and growth across customer operations, marketing, software engineering, and research & development. This transformative technology empowers businesses to generate personalized content, unique designs, and innovative product ideas, unlocking a future where AI fosters creativity and fuels growth for all.

Businesses are always searching for innovative ways to boost growth, efficiency, and stay ahead of the curve. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force, revolutionizing industries and redefining the way businesses operate. In this post, we will explore the differences between “discriminative” and “generative” AI and how businesses can unlock the full power of AI.

Breaking Down the Barriers of Discriminative AI

Discriminative AI models are designed to classify and predict outcomes based on existing patterns in the data. While they’ve achieved remarkable success in various applications, their reliance on large training datasets and computational power makes them expensive and inaccessible to many organizations.

To overcome the data limitations, many companies have combined discriminative AI technologies (e.g., Natural Language Processing) with rule-based solutions to extract actionable insights from data. While at Wolters Kluwer, we successfully delivered a product, called CCH iQ, to identify clients impacted by tax legislation changes, analyze the impact on their tax returns, and identify potential opportunities for additional tax services (see Forbes article). In turn, we assumed that the manual reviewing by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) of the output would lead to the curation of high-quality training sets, which could be used to train efficient and more robust supervised machine learning models

Evolution of Rule-based Systems to leverage Discriminative AI

However, we observed that SMEs were generally unwilling to provide additional feedback beyond their primary goals (e.g. identifying regulatory changes). Furthermore, we observed inconsistencies when asking multiple SMEs to label data.

While discriminative models rely heavily on labeled data and struggle with novelty, generative AI can learn from unlabeled data and generate new, original content. This makes generative AI a potentially more efficient and adaptable solution for businesses facing data limitations and seeking to address unforeseen situations.

The Rise of Generative AI: Unlocking Business Value

Generative AI has emerged as a powerful new force in the world of artificial intelligence, offering businesses a multitude of benefits that address the limitations of traditional discriminative AI. By automating repetitive tasks and unleashing creative potential, generative AI empowers businesses to operate more efficiently and effectively, all while unlocking the hidden value within their data.

A key factor driving the adoption of generative AI is the availability of large pre-trained language models (LLMs). Services like Google Gemini, OpenAI ChatGPT, and open-source models like Meta LLaMA and AI2 OLMo have made AI accessible to businesses without requiring extensive in-house expertise. These models are trained on vast datasets, enabling them to understand and generate human-like text, code, and even images, effectively unlocking the value of the data they have been trained on.

Four Key Areas for Generative AI in Business

In a recent article on the economic potential of Generative AI, McKinsey & Company highlighted four areas where it will have a significant impact:

  • Customer Operations: Generative AI-powered chatbots provide 24/7 support, answer common questions, and personalize interactions. Take Octopus Energy, for example, whose conversational AI is replacing human agents, improving customer satisfaction and saving costs (see Forbes article). By analyzing customer interactions, these chatbots can learn and adapt, continually improving their ability to understand and respond to customer needs, further unlocking the value of data on customer behavior.
  • Marketing & Sales: Businesses can leverage generative AI to create engaging marketing materials, social media content, and even personalized reports. Salesforce’s integration of AI into its platform showcases how these technologies can streamline marketing efforts and personalize customer journeys. The insights generated from data analysis can inform personalized marketing campaigns, ensuring that the right message reaches the right audience at the right time, maximizing the value of customer data (see Marketing AI).
  • Software Engineering: Generative AI empowers software engineers to innovate, improve code quality, and work more efficiently. Tools like Cognition’s Devin and GitHub Copilot are transforming software development by analyzing existing code, identifying patterns, and suggesting improvements.
  • Research & Development: Generative AI can be used to generate new product ideas, prototype designs, and even optimize product features. Companies like Eli Lilly and Company are using generative AI to accelerate drug discovery, significantly reducing the time and cost associated with traditional lab methods. The ability to analyze large datasets of scientific literature and experimental results enables the generation of new hypotheses and accelerate the discovery process, unlocking the immense value of scientific data.

The Future of Data-Driven Businesses

The journey from data to insights has taken a radical turn with the emergence of Generative AI. By overcoming the limitations of traditional discriminative AI models, generative AI empowers businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, driving efficiency, innovation, and growth. No longer confined by the need for extensive labeled data, generative AI utilizes vast pre-trained language models to extract value from unlabeled data, generating new ideas, content, and even code.

This transformative power is no longer exclusive to tech giants. The democratization of generative AI is ushering in a new era of accessibility and innovation for businesses of all sizes. User-friendly tools and a wide range of applications have made generative AI a readily available resource. From revolutionizing customer interactions with AI-powered chatbots to automating marketing campaigns and revolutionizing software development, generative AI’s applications span diverse business functions. Its ability to analyze data and generate novel solutions has the power to transform industries and redefine the way we work.

Embrace the Possibilities

Whether it’s generating personalized content, crafting unique designs, or exploring new product ideas, generative AI fuels creativity and opens doors to solutions beyond the ordinary. By embracing this technology and encouraging exploration, businesses can unlock the full potential of their data and drive a future where AI fosters innovation and fuels growth for all.
